As a dog lover do you have trouble understanding people who love cats? I happen to like both dogs and cats, preferably big dogs, and there is a difference straight away, big cats or small cats? Well, I suppose when thinking cats we are generally thinking of domesticated cats. But there are enormous cats out there, larger than the biggest dog such as a male lion.
But back to the question. What is it about cats and dogs that we love? And what are the most significant differences? The first thing that comes to mind is that dogs need much more attention than a cat. They need long walks, and they love it if we play with them, and in that respect, they are perfect for us as well as when we exercise our dog, then we are exercising ourselves as well.
Cats on the other hand just like to be. As long as they have some food and water, they are content to lie around the house doing nothing slowly, and occasionally wander off and visit a neighbour and make themselves at home there as well. Yes, some cats, especially younger ones love to play with us, chasing bits of string around and maybe amusing us by running up and down the curtains. But generally, they simply chill out.
All dogs and cats have different personalities. Some cats are not bothered about being in contact with us, but others love to jump on a lap and make themselves comfortable. In a way, this is one of the cutest things about a cat, and for a more mature person who cannot go out on long walks, having the comfort of a cat on their lap is a wonderful loving experience.
Dogs, on the other hand, express their love to us in a very visual way. Whenever we come home having been out all day, or even for a short visit to the shops, on arrival a delighted looking dog, with tail wagging, and maybe happy squeals will come and greet us. They express unconditional love and can be an excellent lesson in how we should all treat each other. The same greeting and love expressed even if we are much later home than we intended to be. Some humans show the opposite to their partners when they are late!
Dogs have proven to be much more useful to humans as they can be trained to do all sorts of tasks, such as rounding up sheep, sniffing for explosives, being a guard dog and so on. There are many stories of dogs rescuing humans and showing great acts of bravery. However, that is not to say that a cat is less useful. They will attack snakes and protect their owners in countries where snakes are a problem. There are videos of cats chasing off bears, and a few years ago we saw a video of a cat chasing off a dog that attacked a small boy.
So what is the answer? Enjoy them both and marvel at the differences between us, dogs, and cats, and appreciate that a dog helps us to exercise, but a cat will show us how to relax.
